ADVANCING COMPETENCY TRAINING WITH RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, LEARNING ENGINEERING, AND LEARNING SCIENCES. PRODUCE THROUGH A SERIES OF EXPERT WORKSHOPS AND RELATED ACTIVITIES A SET OF DOCUMENTED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF TRAINING SYSTEMS AND THEIR SUPPORTING ECOSYSTEM AND IN PARTICULAR WITH RESPECT TO MEETING ARMYS TRAINING NEEDS SUCH AS PERSISTENT TRACKING OF INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM PERFORMANCE DATA IN ORDER TO BETTER INFER PROFICIENCY LEVELS, IDENTIFY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, AND ADAPTIVELY TAILOR COACHING AND REMEDIATION. AMONG ONGOING ARMY TRAINING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS, THE PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY PROVIDE INPUT TO PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE GENERALIZED INTELLIGENT FRAMEWORK FOR TUTORING AND THE STE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FOR READINESS PROJECT. FURTHERMORE, THE PROJECT WILL INTEGRATE AUTOTUTOR, A STATE OF THE ART CONVERSATIONAL TUTOR, WITH GIFT IN ORDER TO AUGMENT GIFT WITH COMPONENTS THAT PROMOTE DEEP, CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF TARGET TOPICS WHICH IS A KEY STRENGTH OF SUCH ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEMS SUCH AS AUTOTUTOR. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO OPTIMIZE COMPETENCY TRAINING IN ORDER TO MEET ARMYS WARFIGHTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS.
