MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY (MSU) WILL CARRY OUT A PROGRAMMATIC STUDY OF THE FISSION PROCESS IN NUCLEI, BASED ON SELF-CONSISTENT DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY AND ITS EXTENSIONS, FOCUSING ON MEDIUM-MASS NUCLEI AND THE ACTINIDE AND TRANSACTINIDE REGIONS. THEY PERFORM SYSTEMATIC SELF-CONSISTENT CALCULATIONS OF TO ESTIMATE SPONTANEOUS FISSION LIFETIMES AND MASS AND CHARGE FRAGMENT YIELDS USING DYNAMIC ADIABATIC APPROACHES. TO ESTIMATE THEORETICAL UNCERTAINTIES, THEY APPLY ADVANCED METHODS OF UNCERTAINTY QUANTIFICATION SUCH AS BAYESIAN MACHINE LEARNING AND BAYESIAN MODEL MIXING. TO CARRY OUT LARGE-SCALE FISSION STUDIES, THEY APPLY MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES TO EMULATE EXPENSIVE SIMULATIONS AND TO REDUCE THE COLLECTIVE SPACE OF COMPUTATIONS.
