**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** VETERINARIANS FACE SEVERAL CHALLENGES WHEN COMMUNICATING WITH THEIR CLIENTS ABOUT THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF THE ANIMALS THEY TREAT. ONE OF THOSE CHALLENGES IS TALKING WITH CLIENTS ABOUT THE PROPER USE OF ANTIBIOTICS AND OTHER ANTIMICROBIAL TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR ANIMALS. ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IS A THREAT TO ANIMAL, HUMAN, AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AROUND THE WORLD. VETERINARIANS ARE KEY INFORMATION AND TREATMENT RESOURCES FOR CLIENTS ACROSS FIELDS OF STUDY, FROM COMPANION ANIMALS TO ANIMAL AGRICULTURE. THE GOAL OF OUR GRANT PROJECT IS TO HELP VETERINARY MEDICINE STUDENTS BE MORE COMFORTABLE COMMUNICATING ABOUT PROPER USE AND DISPOSAL OF ANTIBIOTICS, ADOPTION OF VACCINES AND ANTIBIOTIC ALTERNATIVES, AS WELL AS IMPROVING THEIR COMFORT IN MANAGING INFORMATION AND MEDICATION REQUESTS FROM CLIENTS. FOR THIS INTEGRATED USDA PROJECT, WE WILL FIRST IDENTIFY THE GAPS IN CURRENT VETERINARY MEDICINE INSTRUCTION ABOUT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION. NEXT, WE WILL WORK WITH EXPERTS IN VETERINARY MEDICAL EDUCATION AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF MODULES TO SUPPLEMENT CURRENT VETERINARY MEDICINE EDUCATION THAT FOCUSES ON IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AND THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC USE (I.E., ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP) TO VARIOUS AUDIENCES (E.G., CLIENTS, THE PUBLIC, AND OTHER VETERINARIANS). AFTER TESTING AND REVISING THE MODULES TO BE SURE THEY ARE EFFECTIVE AT ACCOMPLISHING THESE OUTCOMES, WE WILL MAKE THE MODULES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS AND PRACTICING VETERINARIAN TO GAIN CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS AND HELP CURB ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IN ANIMAL HEALTH. THE PROJECT OFFERS ONE OF THE FIRST USDA-FUNDED PROJECTS TO EMPHASIZE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AS A KEY ELEMENT OF CONTRIBUTING TO ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP AND THE PREVENTION OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IN VETERINARY MEDICINE.

BETTER ANIMAL HEALTH AND DISEASE CONTROL HAS LEAD TO THE RISE IN ANTIBIOTIC USE AND IN TURN INCREASE IN AMR. ALTHOUGH STUDIES HAVE INVESTIGATED AMR GENES IN THE BEEF CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM, THESE STUDIES HAVE YIELDED LIMITED SUCCESS IDENTIFYING THE ANTIMICROBIAL GENE RESERVOIRS AND ITS ECOLOGY, AS THESE STUDIES HAVE FAILED TO INVESTIGATE THE LARGEST RESERVOIR OF AMR GENES, THE PLASMIDOME, VIROME AND OTHER MOBILE GENETIC ELEMENTS WHICH ARE "HOTSPOTS" FOR "HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER EVENTS" AND AMR GENES. CONSEQUENTLY, THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS APPLICATION IS TO DETERMINE THE ECOLOGY AND TRANSMISSION OF AMR GENE RESERVOIRS BY EVALUATING THE MOBILE GENETIC ELEMENTS IN THE CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM AND DEVELOP SCIENCE-BASED INTERVENTION STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE EMERGENCE OF ANTIMICROBIAL DRUG RESISTANCE AND EFFECT CHANGE IN MANAGEMENT THROUGH OUTREACH. WE WILL UTILIZE A NEWLY RENOVATED RESEARCH FEEDLOT THAT HAS NOT BEEN EXPOSED TO ANY ANTIBIOTICS AND ANIMALS NEVER EXPOSED TO ANTIBIOTICS TO EVALUATE BASELINE LEVELS OF AMR GENES AND CHANGES AFTER ANTIBIOTIC EXPOSURE IN THE ANIMALS AND PEN SURFACE TO IDENTIFY AMR GENE PREVALENCE, ENRICHMENT, ECOLOGY AND TRANSMISSION. ADDITIONALLY, A NOVEL PROBIOTIC DEVELOPED BY THIS TEAM AGAINST LIVER ABSCESSES WILL BE EVALUATED. WE WILL PHENOTYPE THE VIROME, PLASMIDOME, MICROBIAL COMMUNITY AND ASSOCIATED AMR GENES, AND ANTIMICROBIAL COMPOUNDS. THIS WORK IS EXPECTED TO TRANSLATE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL MANAGEMENT AND NUTRITIONAL STRATEGIES THAT REDUCE ANTIMICROBIAL USE IN THE CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM AND ESTABLISH A SUCCESSFUL OUTREACH NETWORK THAT YIELDS IMPROVED INFORMATION TRANSFER TO CONSUMERS TO INCREASE CONFIDENCE IN THE SAFETY OF BEEF PRODUCTS.
