** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SINCE THE 1980S, WE HAVE SEEN CHANGES IN HOW HURRICANES AND STORMS DEVELOP AND IMPACT OUR COMMUNITIES. RECENT YEARS HAVE SHOWN MORE INTENSE STORMS AND HURRICANES THAT INTENSIFY IN RECORD TIME. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT A PORTION OF THESE CHANGES IS BECAUSE OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE UNITED NATIONS DEFINES CLIMATE CHANGE AS TO LONG-TERM SHIFTS IN TEMPERATURES AND WEATHER PATTERNS. HURRICANES AND STORMS ARE NOT THE ONLY CLIMATE-RELATED EVENTS RESULTING FROM THIS PHENOMENON. OTHER EFFECTS INCLUDE DROUGHTS, FLOODS, HEAT WAVES, AND WILDFIRES. AS SEEN RECENTLY IN PLACES LIKE FLORIDA, CALIFORNIA, AND PUERTO RICO, THESE EVENTS CAN LEAD TO EMERGENCIES AND DISASTERS THAT SIMULTANEOUSLY AFFECT OUR ABILITY TO GET FOOD, GO TO WORK, OR EVEN SECURE OUR HOUSES. HOWEVER, NOT ALL PLACES ARE IMPACTED THE SAME. SOME REGIONS ARE MORE PRONE TO AND AT RISK OF EXPERIENCING CLIMATE-RELATED EVENTS. THIS IS THE CASE OF THE US CARIBBEAN TERRITORIES LIKE PUERTO RICO AND US VIRGIN ISLANDS. FURTHERMORE, SOME POPULATIONS AND COMMUNITIES CAN STRUGGLE TO RESPOND AND RECOVER WHEN A HURRICANE OR A SIMILAR DISASTER OCCURS. THAT IS THE CASE FOR AGRICULTURAL WORKERS WHO, BY THE NATURE OF THEIR OCCUPATION, ARE CONSTANTLY SUBJECT TO THE CLIMATE AND ITS CHANGES. AGRICULTURAL WORKERS ALSO HAVE ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES WHEN CONSIDERING THEIR SOCIAL CONDITIONS LIKE THE WORK ENVIRONMENT AND INCOME. MOREOVER, AGRICULTURAL WORKERS WITH LIMITED ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE CAN EXPERIENCE EVEN MORE CHALLENGES DURING CLIMATE-RELATED EVENTS.IT IS ESSENTIAL TO DEVELOP PUBLIC POLICY AND SUSTAINABLE PROGRAMS AND STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITIES TO PREVENT OR LESSEN THE DAMAGE OF FUTURE DISASTERS. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO ASSIST COMMUNITIES IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING AND INCREASING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES TO ADAPT AND LIMIT THE EFFECT OF THESE EVENTS. TO DO THIS, WE NEED TO RELY UPON ORGANIZATIONS WITH EXPERIENCE IN CREATING AND MAINTAINING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH THESE COMMUNITIES, LIKE THE FEDERAL QUALIFIED HEALTH CENTERS. THE FQHC ARE OUTPATIENT CLINICS THAT PROVIDE HEALTHCARE IN RURAL AREAS. FOR THESE CENTERS TO ADDRESS THE WAY COMMUNITIES UNDERSTAND, PREPARE FOR, AND RECOVER FROM CLIMATE CHANGE-RELATED EVENTS CLINICIANS MUST UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN HELP IN DETERMINING CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS ON THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE, AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACTIVITIES, POLICIES, AND RESOURCES THAT OFFSET SUCH IMPACTS.MIGRANT CLINICIANS NETWORK (MCN), A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, PROPOSES TO PARTNER WITH CARIBBEAN CLIMATE HUB, A FEDERALLY FUNDED COLLABORATION ACROSS THE USDA AND OTHER AGENCIES, TO CARRY OUT A THREE-YEAR PROGRAM TO INCREASE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITIES' ABILITY TO ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES USING CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AND NEWLY DEVELOPED TOOLS. SPECIFICALLY, THIS PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON BUILDING UP THE ABILITY OF FQHCS IN PUERTO RICO AND THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS TO FACILITATE THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION, RESOURCES, AND SERVICES RELATED TO CLIMATE ADAPTATION AND IDENTIFY POTENTI,AL CLIMATE-RELATED HAZARDS AFFECTING THE LIVELIHOODS OF FARMERS AND FARMWORKERS. WE AIM TO IMPACT 8 FQHCS, 40 CLINICIANS AND 1, 600 FARMERS, FARMWORKERS, AND FARMING COMMUNITY MEMBERS. DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING THESE TYPES OF PROGRAMS WILL SUPPORT THE JOURNEY OF OUR FARMING COMMUNITIES IN THEIR PATH TO ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE, ALLOWING THEM TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND INCREASE THE RESILIENCY OF THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY. THIS COULD HELP SUSTAIN THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF SECURING THE FOOD OF OUR POPULATION.
