WE SEEK SUPPORT FOR CONTINUING ANALYSIS OF COMETARY SAMPLES RETURNED BY THE STARDUST MISSION AND SAMPLES OF THE SUN RETURNED BY THE GENESIS MISSION. FOR THE STARDUST ANALYSES WE WILL FOCUS ON SEVERAL IMPORTANT UNSOLVED PROBLEMS AS DESCRIBED IN THE FUTURE OF STARDUST SCIENCE (WESTPHAL ET AL. MAPS 2017). ONE SUCH UNSOLVED PROBLEM (OBJECTIVE 1 IN WESTPHAL ET AL.) IS WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FINE-GRAINED MATERIAL IN WILD 2 AND THE FINE-GRAINED MATRIX IN PRIMITIVE METEORITES. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A SYNCHROTRON- AND SEM-BASED TECHNIQUE THAT ALLOWS FOR DIRECT COMPARISON OF THE CONCENTRATION OF MICRO-CAIS IN WILD 2 FINE-GRAINED MATERIAL AND PRIMITIVE METEORITE MATRICES. THIS TECHNIQUE ALSO ALLOWS FOR A DIRECT COMPARISON OF LIME/LICE OLIVINE CONCENTRATION. WE WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO CARRY OUT HIGH-PRECISION O-ISOTOPE ANALYSES (OBJECTIVE 2) AL-MG SYSTEMATICS FOR AGE-DATING (OBJECTIVE 3) COORDINATED TEM/STXM STUDIES OF MICROCHONDRULES AND FINE-GRAINED MATERIALS (OBJECTIVES 5 AND 6). THIS WORK IS SUPPORTED BY AN ONGOING PROJECT IN OUR GROUP TO DEVELOP ACCURATE V AND TI OXYBAROMETRY USING SYNTHETIC SAMPLES AND DFT MODELING. FOR THE ANALYSIS OF GENESIS SAMPLES WE ARE GUIDED BY THE UNSOLVED PROBLEMS DESCRIBED IN THE FUTURE OF GENESIS SCIENCE (BURNETT ET AL. MAPS SUBMITTED). WE WILL COMPLETE OUR HIGH-PRECISION MEASUREMENT OF THE RELATIVE ABUNDANCES OF MG ISOTOPES IN COLLABORATION WITH GARY HUSS. THIS IS THE HIGHEST-PRIORITY GOAL DESCRIBED IN BURNETT ET AL. WE ARE USING ION IMAGING WITH BACKSIDE PROFILING ALONG WITH A HIGH-PRECISION CALIBRATION METHOD. WE HAVE ALSO DEVELOPED A NEW SHUTTER-BASED CALIBRATION IMPLANT TECHNIQUE THAT WILL SIMULTANEOUSLY ENABLE MEASUREMENTS OF MAJOR ELEMENTS IN THE SOLAR WIND WITH MUCH HIGHER PRECISION THAN HAS BEEN POSSIBLE UNTIL NOW AND WILL GIVE ACCESS TO MEASUREMENTS OF MINOR ELEMENT CONCENTRATIONS THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNMEASURED OR ONLY HAVE BEEN MEASURED WITH LOW PRECISION. THESE INCLUDE INTERMEDIATE AND LOW-FIP ELEMENTS K NA CA AL P S (OBJECTIVES 2 AND 8 IN BURNETT ET AL.) HEAVY-ELEMENT (E.G. FE) ISOTOPIC RATIOS (OBJECTIVE 4) MN CONCENTRATION (OBJECTIVE 5). THIS WORK WILL ALSO PAVE THE WAY TOWARDS MEASUREMENTS OF TRACE ELEMENTS (Z>32) WHICH CURRENTLY HAVE CONCENTRATIONS IN GENESIS COLLECTORS THAT ARE TOO SMALL TO BE MEASURABLE BY CURRENT TECHNIQUES.
